Dance Recital 2014

The girls dance recital was today!  It's been a long time coming.  They were so excited, and so brave.  Neither one of them batted an eye about going up on stage in front of all those people...

The girls did two numbers: they were part of the opening act, "rock n' roll music," and their class performed "Under the Sea."

A snippet from the opening number (girls are in the front on the right wearing blue shirts):

Auds has the moves, just a few seconds early?  The minute the lights went up and the music kicked on Audrey was hopping in that circle.  It was awesome.

The big finish with guitars in the air:

And a second later, Audrey throws hers:

She paused briefly to rub her eye, but there was no nose picking!

Their class was the first of the little kids to go, and a collective, "awwww!" could be heard as the lights came up on them.  They were adorable, and a lot better than their dress rehearsal, surprisingly.

I actually caught Audrey and Maggie doing the same move at the same time:

As you can see, there were bubbles going during their dance.  That was new for them, and sort of hilarious because you could tell they all just want to go pop them.

Here is the video Amos shot.  He did pretty good.  A couple things to watch for:

Wardie makes an appearance at the 49 second mark.

About 1:32 the dancers go to pick up musical instruments for their dance.  Approximately 1:37 Audrey slide tackles another dancer for an instrument (bottom left hand side).  For the next several seconds she runs around the stage from instrument to instrument.  At 2:08 the entire audience cheers as Audrey finally settles back into the line with the first instrument she picked up 30 seconds earlier.

I cried I was laughing so hard.  What a good, good day.  I really hope I get to watch them in a million more of these.

We have been taking what seems like the slowest approach towards a dance recital ever.  Costumes got sent home about a month and a half ago...the girls have been going nuts with anticipation ever since.  A couple weeks ago they had picture day, so they actually got to put on their costumes instead of just staring at them hanging in my closet.  Sidenote: I cannot believe they had the willpower to leave them alone in my closet.

Picture day was a good learning experience.  I learned:

1. Maggie's first instinct after I painstakingly do her hair-to touch it.  Not gently, but in a heavy handed smushing fashion.

2. Audrey's first instinct after I painstakingly do her hair-to touch it.  Not gently, but in a heavy handed smushing fashion.

3. Tripping will happen and tights will be torn.

4. Make-up is incredibly difficult to put on a moving target.

Amos did an awesome job of entertaining Wardie, who wanted nothing else but to be free to knock over every light, camera, and tiny dancer.

At the very end, Audrey was kind enough to throw a crazy fit.  At least it was after she got her picture taken.

That brings us to THIS week.  On Wednesday, we had dress rehearsal.  The girls were so excited to get to go on the big stage at the high school.

(And, no, their teacher is not twerking, she's marking their spots with tape.)

Once again, Amos saved the day by entertaining Ward.  Though, both boys sat pretty still to watch the dancing.

Having seen the rehearsal, I am certain we are in for quite the show.  Probably with nose picking.

Pre-K Complete

Today Maggie's school had a preschool graduation.  It was at a bounce house place, with a quick ceremony before bouncing and pizza!

The grads all lined up:

Taking a bow (must be a dance class thing):

I didn't get many pictures, but there was bouncing for all:

This place had a legit bubble machine, it was a huge hit:

Kindergarten Complete

This one is for Eric, he's such a strong support of things like "kindergarten graduations:"

Today, Amos' kindergarten class had a small ceremony and party for the end of school.  Several papers came home from school about it.  They all said it started at 2:30, one said it started at 2:00.  I rolled in with Ward and Audrey at 2:25 (early!) just in time to catch Amos getting his certificate and to miss pretty much everyone else's.  That worked out in my favor.  Not sure if they did anything else though?

Amos had an interesting year in kindergarten.  He LOVED his teacher, Mrs. Davis.  Like, on Saturdays he would say, "I'm sad it's Saturday because that means I don't get to see Mrs. D."

About October though, Amos started to show some anxiety and didn't like school anymore.  I feared he was being bullied.  I asked him a lot of questions about the kids, and how they played together, etc.  All seemed well on that front.  It wasn't until my parent-teacher conference in November that I learned who the real bully was-common core.  The poor kid felt so much pressure from the testing required by the common core, he was sobbing his eyes out =(  Not cool.  Thankfully, we were able to work with him through it, and he started loving school again.

I wasn't able to volunteer in Amos' class this year, and that made us both pretty sad.  They don't let siblings come, and finding a regular sitter just wasn't happening.  I helped how I could (like counting box tops at home), but I felt so disconnected from his school experience.  Someday...

Look at this cool guy:

The classroom was pretty crowded, so I left Ward and Audrey in the hall.  They didn't seem to mind, especially since they got party food.

There was seriously so much frosting on that cupcake.

So, that's it.  Kindergarten complete.  Weird.
