Pretty special if you asked me. My Dad put it best when he said that they both acknowledged each other as best as they could. They did a darn good job if you ask me.
Not only was it something we all got to do as a family for Audrey, but it was a chance for me to show Eric the very best part of my childhood. We spent two weeks every summer in Minnesota with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. After five years of marriage, it was fun to have something new for Eric to experience with me.
I told Eric going into the trip that they would be the nicest, most loving people he would ever meet and my Minnesota people didn't disappoint. There is a hospitality gene that runs deep and they know how to make you feel welcome and comfortable better than anyone. (And I am not just saying that because they made the most amazing homemade onion rings. Although, I can be bought with deep fried food).
We mostly hung out in Alexandria at my Aunt Sharon and Uncle Verl's house. Like I said, they are very gracious hosts. We never wanted for anything-the food, entertainment, and company were all top notch.
'Grandpa' Verl still has the best toys!
All Audrey needed was a blue spoon =)

Gin worked really hard to build a beautiful tower that the kids knocked over in about 1 minute.
See the cheese puffs in the background? Maggie ate all of those by herself!

We did make it to Fergus Falls, Minnesota one morning. We showed Eric all of the sites, including: the Young townhouse, the Shaver townhouse, all of the respective schools of Grammy/Grampy Shaver, Dairyland, the road route they used to cruise in high school until it was time to park ;), the Shaver side of Swan Lake, Grotto Park (see giant Otter), Lake Alice, the Shaver cemetery, the Young cemetery, and downtown.
For the record, she starts each day with a ponytail and a hairclip. It never lasts.
While we were there we also got to celebrate a big anniversary! Gin and John Westby had their 45th anniversary while we were there (Sharon and Verl and Rob and Loreli also had their anniversaries. Busy week!). Sharon and Loreli put together a great party for the Westbys and we felt very lucky to be there.
Amos was appalled that they would waste the cake like this =)

The last night we took some more pictures, in spite of a lack of hair and makeup. I am not sure either would have made much of a difference. No one warned me that having three kids would make it virtually impossible to get us all looking good in the same picture. Oh well.
Proof Eric was indeed in Minnesota.
Maggie started making that face totally spontaneously. Seriously.
Well, if you've made it this far, you've done well. Believe it or not, I even left a few pictures out. This one is going to be a doozy to put into the blog book =)
