And so it begins...

We "broke ground" on lower level finishing '08 tonight. Eric is so excited, it makes me excited.

We're very ambitious on our timeline now that we have a little experience. Don't worry, there will be plenty of posts with updates.

Amos' First Big Adventure

Last weekend while I was at work (yes, perfect timing) Eric and his parents took Amos hiking for the first time. Nan and Pop hooked us up with an awesome backpack, and now the Bean is mountain-ready. I am glad Amos got to have this experience, and will get to do lots of outdoor things with his Dad. I'll always be supportive, and I may even participate once in a while.

Margaret-Claire...maybe/maybe not.

So, we've known our new baby is a girl for one day now. We've agreed that we would name our first girl Margaret-Claire (one name, like PeggySue) since before Amos was born. Eric and I both love the name, and it has family ties on both sides for us. Both of our Paternal Grandmothers were Margaret, as is my little sister, Meg. Its a big name for a little girl, but it comes with great nicknames: Meg, Maggie. So, it should be simple, right? No such luck. Now that baby girl Horne is a reality, I am not sure she is meant to be Margaret-Claire.

Amos is 100% an "Amos." I don't think there could be a more perfect name for him (aside from Bean, but that's not realistic). Eric and I may have gotten lucky, but I feel like we struck child naming gold with Amos. I read an article not that long ago about people who changed their child's name after they named them something else. So, said child will be watching family videos and wonder who baby Emily is, when in reality it was her. I know a few people who had other names picked out for them. Sometimes they're happy with the name they got and sometimes they feel more like the other name should have been theirs.

I probably should have said this first, but I have a HUGE complex about my name. I actually like it now, but growing up it gave me some issues. Laura is a pretty common name, and especially in grade school, there was always at least one or two other Lauras. I didn't have that many friends as a kid, and there was nothing sadder than thinking someone was calling me, and then them saying, "Not you, the other Laura." Anyway, I fully admit that for this reason I am very anxious about my children's names.

So, Margaret-Claire may stick, but fair warning, it may not.

(P.S. I love you "other" Laura Denner).

Oreo!

Amos had his first taste of Mommy's favorite treat tonight! Of course, cuteness ensued...

Uh?

So, apparently Amos missed the memo that he was not allowed.

LauraLand

Our new house is still very much a work in progress, but I've managed to find time to create "LauraLand." I know, its so dorky, but I LOVE having all of my craft supplies in one place, easily accessible and ridiculously organized. I no longer have my own office, but it is ok. The best part of "LauraLand" is that no boys are allowed!

In other house news, we put a downpayment on our yard tonight! Yeah, we have to buy a yard =( We're going to do some of the work ourselves, but for the most part its over our heads.

A little chuckle

I had to laugh when I got this cartoon in my weekly Babycenter update. My mother is very sympathetic, but its no secret she's enjoying this.

Jailbird

I heard Amos singing away to himself as he woke up from his nap this morning. He's turned into quite the jabberer. Soon the singing was accompanied by rattling crib sounds. I went in to get him, and this is what I found:

It reminds me of a scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World where all the prisoners are rattling the bars try to get out...Yo ho! Yo ho!

8 months old

There was one fatal flaw to the build-a-bear comparison picture idea: I have the antsy-est baby around. Getting him to sit nicely next to the bear was next to impossible. I have to say though, I think these pictures perfectly characterize the Bean at 8 months:

Whew

Our camera cord mysteriously stopped working last week, and I thought we were going to have to buy a new camera =( Luckily today as I was looking up the cord on the Internet to see if I could just buy another cord, I thought, maybe I should try it again. It worked! So, we have a modge podge of pictures...

Amos has become a climbing machine:

A little bandanna fun:

and...he's learned to take off his own diaper...I may have to resort to duct tape:

It finally happened

I got peed on while changing Amos' diaper. We almost made it 8 months! Eric's been peed on a few times, my favorite being the time Amos got his pillow in the middle of the night (who changes a baby in their bed??). Anyway, it was my first time, and I feel like I've been dubbed a knight or something.

For those of you who thought you saw enough of the teal maternity skirt last summer, its back!:
I got invited to join a walking group in our neighborhood with some other moms. It is great, BUT, they meet at 7 a.m.! I had to wake Amos up to put him in his stroller this morning. It was a beautiful morning, and I am glad I went. Amos was very confused, but I think he had a good time too. Eric loves it because he actually gets to see us in the morning.

Here is Amos before I woke him this morning:
